UK’s Largest Auction Network Arrives in Scotland

Scottish shoppers are in for a bargain as leading UK Auction House John Pye Auctions is to open an Edinburgh hub, offering a range of retail stock clearances including goods sourced from John Lewis.

The expansion by the UK’s largest auction network will see John Pye Auctions bring the UK’s largest retail stock clearance auctions to Scotland, in response to growing client demand, and the prospect of job creation in Bo’Ness over the next few years.

The company, founded in 1968, has grown organically from one site to 17 over the last four years having secured a series of high-profile Retail, Government, Insolvency and Lending disposals contracts.

Last year John Pye Auctions held over 450 auctions, managing over 45,000 pallets of clearance stock for 80% of the Top 10 biggest names in Retail, including the John Lewis Partnership.

The company already has the largest auction salesroom facility in the UK with an 11-acre site with six purpose built auction salerooms encompassing 180,000 sq. ft. at their West Midlands Auction Hub in Marchington, Staffs.

The new John Pye Auctions Edinburgh Hub, located at nearby Bo’Ness, will open next week, becoming one of the largest auction hubs in the John Pye network, spanning Plymouth to Scotland, with a 5-acre footprint at Bo’Ness encompassing 40,000 sq. ft.

John Pye Auctions has purchased the Bo’Ness property from Scottish family Auctioneers, DJ Manning, who have ceased auction operations to focus on property and storage business concerns.

John Pye Auctions MD Adam Pye said: “We have known DJ Mannings for over a decade and have worked on a number of joint national instructions together.

Mannings have cemented a long-standing auction business in the East of Scotland which John Pye Auctions hope to build on further.”

It is a fantastic location with easy access from Edinburgh and the airport, as well as a relatively short journey from Glasgow and other notable Scottish cities and towns.”

We have a number of significant national clients who have pledged substantial retail stock clearance offerings for our forthcoming auctions, which should prove a draw for bargain hunters across Scotland.”

John Pye Auctions Scottish opening comes in the same month John Pye has opened its Luxury Assets boutique auction rooms at 5 Old Bond Street, Mayfair, London, where John Pye is managing the UK’s largest private collection of natural precious gemstones to be made available to auction in a generation.

John Pye Auctions growth has been fuelled significantly by a full transition from traditional physical auctions exclusively to online auctions over the last four years. Auction bidders and buyers can attend John Pye Auctions hubs to view Lots, items for auction, within the saleroom to inspect items for suitability but rather than wait to bid in a bidding room on-site, customers go away to bid remotely online with each online auction lasting typically four days, normally Friday to Monday, with viewings held over this period.

John Pye Auctions now manages over 26,000 asset instructions a year, holding more than 450 online auctions, supported by physical saleroom viewings, offering more than one million lots a year to the auction market. They count some of the leading names in UK banking, lending, retail, insolvency and Central Government authorities as their clients.

The company was last month awarded Asset Valuer / Auctioneer of the Year in the UK Insolvency & Rescue Awards at the Park Lane Hilton, London, in recognition of its industry-leading work, with a particular note made of its management of the Phones4U Administration stock management and auctions for Administrator PWC. The case involved John Pye Auctions managing, marketing and selling over 3,500 Tote boxes of mobile phones, tablets and digital accessories.

John Pye Business Development Director, Sheldon Miller, said: “We have developed the brand and the business to successfully offer a full comprehensive mix of stock and assets online, from retail stock and luxury assets through to vehicles and property, attracting new customers to the auction market through accessible online auctions. We offer a very different auction experience, more accessible and more convenient.”

As we have expanded more sites across the UK, our clients continually mentioned Scotland more than any other as a key area of interest. Our retail clients have a strong requirement for a robust auction outlet within Scotland and we anticipate growing the business and job prospects over the next few years. We have recruited 10 staff initially and we expect to at the very least double that staff count in the next two years, most likely treble it, as we have with all our sites within their first two-year opening period.”

We’re very much looking forward to presenting John Pye Auctions offerings in the patch.

John Pye Auctions organic growth, from bricks to clicks, across the UK, has seen its registered bidder database grow by 1,304% over the last four years to 147,000 registered bidders. The company has grown from 50 staff to over 180 in the last four years.
