This summer we are pleased to share we are marking two major milestones as we have achieved both a record trading year and are marking our 50th Anniversary year as a business.
Family owner operated we have grown from a single site auction firm in 2011 to a nationwide operation with 22 UK sites to date, growing our staff headcount from 54 full-time staff to 375 to date.
As we enter the final quarter of our trading year (which runs from Aug 1st to July 31st) we have increased our auction count to an average of 90 online auctions a month, attracting auction interest from 275,000 registered bidders.
Founded in 1968 by husband and wife John and Ann Pye, originally operating as a sole trader based out of Nottingham’s Old Cattle Market – we have now grown from a single site operation in the city to a network of 22 sites across England, Scotland and Wales.
As a family business and the UK’s largest auction house network, we are pleased to be celebrating its 50th anniversary by supporting the communities we operate in and planning for further growth.
We sell a wide range of items from iPhones to sofas and property to baby clothes and we work with major UK high-street retailers, insolvency practitioners, banks, lenders, government agencies and agents.
As the UK’s fastest growing auction company, our competitive advantage has been built upon decades of industry innovation, propelling the company to take the bold step of being the first auction house to embrace online opportunities by fully transitioning from live, traditional auctions to online, timed auctions in 2013, a process which started in 2008.
We are marking our 50th milestone with a number of business development announcements to further bolster our client and customer service offerings; hosting celebration events and giving back to the communities in which we trade through a number of charity initiatives – including a charity auction in partnership with Nottingham Country Cricket Club for a chance to grab one of the amazing 16 T20 shirts – Anniversary Celebration limited edition.
Since the beginning of 2018, we committed to mentoring and promoting one Midlands-based business each month.
Adam Pye, our managing director said: “Fifty years in any industry is a remarkable achievement for any organisation, but to be able to say we are a 50-year-old family owner operated firm in this modern era is a rare and beautiful thing.
“All of John Pye Auctions’ development and growth has been organic with no mergers or acquisitions made to date, the growth has all been made based on our own achievements. It’s a privilege I share with my family, friends and colleagues here at John Pye Auctions, who have worked together on building a diverse business which spans many markets and we are grateful to have so many fantastic clients and customers. Every day is a fresh new challenge, and we are always learning and evolving, which is what we embrace.”
We have been recognised both regionally and nationally as the leader in our field with a series of prestigious awards, and last year making history by being crowned ‘Asset Valuer/ Auctioneer of the Year’ at the UK Turnaround, Restructuring and Insolvency (TRI) Awards for the third year in a row. We also continuously support various charities and has raised over £100k for good causes over the last ten years.
From horse and cart beginnings when John Pye Auctions began with house clearances to a showroom in Mayfair’s Old Bond Street, John Pye’s ambition to develop the business without limits has remained constant over the last 50 years, as has the personable nature within the business at all levels. Over the last 15 years alone, our workforce has swelled from 24 employees to more than 375 and continues to grow at a rapid rate, with a focus on both domestic and international expansion ahead – having the potential to double in size the next five to ten years.
Adam added: “With more opportunities presenting themselves domestically, engagements in Europe and UAE, and the real possibility of opening facilities in the next few years in America, the short, medium and long-term future is looking very bright.
“The additional investment into technology, in our bidding systems and making the customer journey a lot simpler for buyers to find and buy what they want quickly is a big focus in this 50th year. The goal is for our registered buyer database to surpass 400,000 individuals within the next five years.
“I want to give a big thank you to our clients, customers and ever-extending family of staff for their support over the last 50 years. We sincerely appreciate it and value each and every one of you. Here’s to the next 50 years ahead.”
We operate five trading departments; John Pye Retail, John Pye Luxury Assets, John Pye Property, John Pye Business Assets and John Pye Vehicles, which all supply stock and assets for sale, offering over 17,000 lots a week and totalling on average over 90 auctions a month.
